Description

Natural Cassis Pearl

Cassis pearls are among the rarest natural pearls in the world, formed inside marine gastropods of the Cassis genus, such as the Queen Helmet (Cassis madagascariensis) and other helmet shells. Unlike nacreous pearls from oysters, Cassis pearls are non-nacreous, meaning they lack the iridescent layers of mother-of-pearl and instead exhibit a smooth, porcelain-like surface. Their appearance is often characterized by soft “flame” patterns, which can range from subtle waves to striking swirls, in hues of creamy white, orange, pink, or brown. These pearls form when the mollusk secretes calcium carbonate around an irritant or injury, a process that can take many years, making them exceptionally rare. Most Cassis pearls are baroque or oval, with perfectly round specimens being almost unheard of. Due to their scarcity, distinctive beauty, and the difficulty in harvesting them without harming the host shell, Cassis pearls are highly sought after by collectors and are often valued more for their uniqueness than for size alone. Their natural, warm tones and organic patterns make them a prized choice for bespoke high-end jewelry pieces.
